Why Do I Punish Myself?

Well, it turned out that I watched horror movies for most of the weekend. Not by design, it just kind of happened.

I got home Friday, stressed out about how many people got laid off that day. It's not been a good couple of weeks at work in that regard, so I've been a bit stressed. Anyway, I got home and did my typical computer/watching tv thing. There was sweet nothing on tv and then I got to the IFC channel...Saw II was on...so I thought I'd just watch that and find something else to watch later. Ended up I watch Saw III as well. The movies were...............unpleasant. I really should have turned it off or something...but it was kind of a morbid fascination....ugh.

Saturday was a Masters of Horror night....they actually had a couple I hadn't seen on. Masters of Horror is quite tame in comparison to Saw, I have to say...which is fine enough for me. I did rent Mirrors (with Keifer Sutherland) yesterday, but am just watching it now. Why do I punish myself?

Knew He Was a Dead Man...Poor Guy

I don't normally care what's going on in celebrity airhead news. But in this case, my attention was drawn.

Apparently Patrick Swayze, who has pancreatic cancer, is in the hospital with pneumonia.

He's suffering from Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer. And basically, though he denied it initially...I knew he was a dead man the moment as I saw his picture. When the news came out that he had cancer, he denied the severity of it. But when I saw a photo of him, I basically saw my dad in the last stages before he was bedridden and then eventually died. I saw the same face, the same skeletal visage, the same sadness.

After initially denying it, on Barbara Walter's show he admitted he's got about 2 years. I'd be vaguely surprised if he made it that long. Maybe the pharmaceutical companies will eventually allow a cure. Maybe I'll I'll marry Donald Trump next year and thus put into my plans of ruling the world.

Cancer is a dirty, evil, rotten old whore. Won't someone shoot it in the head?

Well, my drive home on the Dec. 31, was...hellish!!!I left at 10:30ish (am) and headed out. I wasn't too thrilled about the weather as it was snowing..not heavy but not light either. I had about a quarter of a tank of gas and was going to wait until I arrived in Blairmore to fill up, but by the time I got to Sparwood I decided I'd better fill up.I got to the gas station and while the attendant filled my tank, I went into the gas station. I picked up a few things, went up to the cash register and asked the other attendant if she heard what the weather was like in the Pass. She said it was pretty bad.

Now, I had a decision to make. Keep going or go home. But then I though well, what's the weather going to be like tomorrow? So I decided to chance it.Well, it turned out to be an adventure. I got to the place on the road where there was the barrier for when they close the Pass. It was up so I thought, how bad could it be. So I pressed on.

Everyone was going about 50 kms per hour...not fast, but not bad. Some people had their blinkers on because there was snowy fog...but you could still see ok.And then it hit. Whipping snow and the snowy fog got so thick you couldn't see a foot in front of you. Seriously, I couldn't see anything in front of my car. I had my blinker lights (emergency) but realistically, the guy behind you would have already been crawling up your tail pipe before they saw you. It was frightning. I almost cried.

The whole thing was, it was in for a penny, in for a pound. You couldn't turn around...you could only go forward at that point. And I was the "leader." The blind leading the stupid, I swear. We were all going 20 kms or less....but I do believe everyone got through. Took about 2 hours for an hour drive.By the time we hit Coleman, the Pass was closed...the barrier was down and there were people redirecting traffic. I wish it had been closed before I went through.

The roads between Blairmore and Pincher Creek were better. There was blowing snow on the roads...which creeped me out when I drove to Elkford...but nothing like the Pass. I even almost said to Mother Nature out loud "Is that all you got left BIATCH?" I then decided to forgo tempting Fate.

There were only two small challenges left after Pincher Creek...just before Claresholm the wind was blowing very hard and I almost lost control of the car when a huge semi that was towing another semi went past me and just outside of Nanton, going around a downward curve, there was a patch of slushy/icy road and I saw it just in time to slow down. There was a car with a women in the ditch...so I wasn't over reacting...there was a tow truck helping her so I didn't stop. After that it was awesome driving...practically bare roads.

I'm still glad I drove home on the 31st. I just wish that it was little less exciting.

Goals for this Year.

Well, I try not to make resolutions because they seem very "held in stone." So here are my goals for this year:

1. Find a new place to live. Preferably to own.

2. Lose 10 pounds.

3. Recycle more (the plan is to collect all of the cardboard into a bag (recyclable one, of course) and once a week or two take the #2 bus and put what I have in the recycle bin that's on the way to work). I've noticed that there is a lot of cardboard packaging. Not sure what to do with plastics so I'll start with the cardboard.

4. Find a way to make some extra money without getting a second job. ****Meaning not having to go out every night.

5. Eat more at home (I started this last year, and have done well, but I think that I'd like to do more)

6. Spend less.

7. Save more (I've started this and though don't have much...I have some).

Pretty small list, but hey, start small...get to the big stuff later.Pretty small list, but hey, start small...get to the big stuff later.

Recycling/Saving Energy

Here's a few things that I am going to try this year to try and recycle and save energy. If anyone has any more suggestions, please let me know. I'm not obsessive about this...just becoming a little more conscious of it:

1. I will try and find uses (or reuse) for any reusable containers that I obtain. I already do this with zip lock bags and lunch containers. I have a few plastic containers that can be reused for stuff.

2. Start taking recycling in once a week (ok or 2). And, since I don't drive my car that often...I will do it by bus and walking, thus saving gas, thus saving money and energy.

3. Use less plastic bags. I will bring recyclable bags to work so when I go to the grocery store I will have the bags at my "disposal." I do need some plastic bags for the cat litter, but at least I will reduce the bags I use.

4. I will continue to be diligint about turning off things so they do not consume unnecessary energy. Today I put some things that go on "standby" onto a different powerbar and have turned it off until I want to use them. It will hopefully reduce my electricity bill and save energy.

5. I will look into solar power panels to power up my small electronics.

Does anyone else have any suggestions. To be honest, they have to be simple suggestions because otherwise I probably won't get to them.
